RetailMeNot Employee Appreciation Event Recap


Studies overwhelmingly agree that a happy team is a productive team — one willing to rise above challenges, work together to solve problems, and stay with the company longer, working harder and naturally collaborating as a healthy collective. So, when opportunities arise to celebrate the recent successes of a hard-working team and reward them for their dedication, it makes sense to pull out all the stops. That’s one of the ways in which Kennedy Creative Events shines, helping companies put together memorable events that engage and delight employees. Here’s a peek into a recent RetailMeNot employee appreciation event in Austin, for which we were proud to partner with the hometown brand and take over the city’s famed 6th Street entertainment district for an afternoon.

An Austin Original

RetailMeNot is known for connecting customers and retailers, brands and restaurants through digital promotions and discounts. Who are the masterminds on the other side of the computer screen, you ask? Well, they’re a bunch of playful (but professional), customer-focused people who work together every day as a team to save their customers money. Founded in Austin in 2006 and rebranded as RetailMeNot in 2013, the brand is always looking to harness the best aspects of the city into its company events and afford its employees opportunities to engage with the community in unique and inspiring ways.

Behind The Idea

The design of this year’s employee appreciation event in Austin played on personality and characteristics of the RetailMeNot team. Everyone involved in the planning process had a stake in making sure that the company’s culture and mission were reflected in a team-building environment. Exploration and adventure are key components of the company’s core values and the services it provides to customers, making all sorts of experiences more accessible through discounts and specials. So, drawing on the idea of the excitement that comes with new experiences and adventures, an Indiana Jones theme began to emerge.


Choose Your Own Adventure

This event served two purposes, doubling as a team-building event and a celebration. Kennedy and RetailMeNot wanted to respect the individualism of each employee, so we designed the event specifically to allow each team member the freedom of choice. Instead of everyone experiencing the same things at the same time, we let each guest choose how they wanted to spend their afternoon from a menu of options, with everyone coming together at the end of the day to celebrate the year’s successes together.

When attendees arrived at “base camp,” it appeared that the event was just another decor-filled happy hour. But really, that was just the start of it all. The “Choose Your Own Adventure” theme was introduced via a custom-produced welcome video and further revealed in the unveiling of the first event space, as well as each subsequent adventure offered to each employee. Adventures included a ghost tour and high tea at The Driskill Hotel, a sing-a-long and performance by Austin’s very own boy band, PDA, at Pete’s Dueling Piano Bar, improv and bowling at Speakeasy, Geeks Who Drink Trivia at San Jacinto Saloon, and a cooking class with wine tasting at Parkside. As an incentive to really get into the events of the day, tickets were awarded to those who participated fully and could be cashed in for prizes back at “base camp.”


Pulling It Off

The Kennedy team was out in full force for this event, involving all hands on deck to make the multi-tiered surprises a success for all involved. Kennedy and RetailMeNot weren’t the only key players, however. The staff at each of the venues were fully invested throughout the planning process and the day-of, playing a major role in six mini-events all happening simultaneously across several blocks. With each venue being completely different from the next, each came with its own series of complexities and opportunities. Preparing each venue was a top priority for the Kennedy team, offering a full description of the vision and plan paired with the nitty-gritty details needed to pull it all off without a hitch.

The end result: a bunch of hard workers having a grand time being rewarded for all their successes over the past year. Had he been there himself, we’re pretty sure Harrison Ford himself would’ve tipped his hat at all the effort that went into an adventure-filled afternoon.
