Peek Inside the Grand Opening of the Element and Aloft Downtown Austin

With Austin’s downtown skyline in a constant state of change, it can be tough to keep up with all the new faces and places in the heart of the city. But there’s no mistaking the immediate popularity of two new local eateries — Caroline and Upstairs at Caroline — which aren’t just the city center’s hottest new places to grab a bite and an after-hours drink. They’re also the duo of restaurants inside a unique dual hotel that just opened on Congress Avenue. The Element and Aloft Austin Downtown are quite literally two hotels in one building, served by a dual general manager and serving two different sets of clientele simultaneously. We were honored to plan and produce the recent grand opening of both properties. It gave us the opportunity to go into the lab, so to speak, and blend art and science into an experiential concoction that wowed the crowd from beginning to end.

Combining Aloft’s brand palette with a Periodic Table of the Elements theme (in a nod, of course, to the Element side), we incorporated both into the event’s directional signage, invitations and more. We had too much fun coming up with copy for the signs, which played off of old high school chemistry lessons and assigned an “element” (such as “Ah!” — the element of surprise) to each activation we planted throughout the property.

From in-house games like foosball and cornhole to a pop-up succulent shop and an innovative helium-based installation, we kept guests delighted with unexpected moments of discovery at every turn

Caroline, naturally, catered the evening’s food and drink with fermented and nitrogen-treated menu items taking their cue from the night’s motif

Attendees enjoyed music on all three floors through which the event flowed, and custom art pieces incorporated the brands’ colors and point of view across the trio of spaces. Excited chatter filled the air as executives had custom portraits made between stencil tattoo sessions. Tapping into the local Austin comedy community, we integrated an element of humor into the occasion with live performances, and in keeping with the chemistry of the theme, the event benefited GirlStart, a notable nonprofit for young women interested in STEM

It was a night to remember, most definitely, but even if you missed it, the Element and Aloft Austin Downtown — as well as Caroline’s and Upstairs at Caroline’s — are open for business and ready to welcome you into the hottest new property on Congress Avenue.
